Smart Microwave Sensors GmbH (SMS)
Smart Microwave Sensors GmbH (SMS) was founded in November 1997 as a spin-off of the Institute for Communications Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig.
55 employees, most of them scientists and engineers with a PhD or highly specialised skills, form the outstanding staff of SMS. SMS is developing high performance Radar technology. Continuous research development is aimed at market leadership in low-cost, high-performance 24GHz Radar sensors. SMS’s 24GHz narrowband Radar technology has been in automotive volume production since Q1/2006. For Radar based automotive Lane Change Assist solutions, it is today the leading technology worldwide. Long range automotive Forward Collision Warning (FCW) sensors went into production in Q3/2008.
SMS’s automotive technology is today the most successful automotive Radar technology, with more than 600,000 units sold in 2010 (2009: ~400,000). No other automotive Radar sensor technology currently achieves a similar production volume.
Beside the successful automotive products, SMS has been developing products in three more fields: homeland security radars, traffic management sensors and airborne radars, mainly altimeters. In all three application fields except the airborne sensor, products have been successfully introduced to the market and production is ramping up.
